Panopto
Panopto is CSUN's video platform best used for lecture capture. Panopto allows users to record, upload, edit, caption, and share video. Faculty can record using their own camera and microphone, to share screen, share slides, or a combination of both. Panopto works inside Canvas so course videos can be managed and shared with students directly through the course.
Panopto also auto-captions videos and provides an intuitive editor to correct captions so they meet accessibility standards. Viewers can search for any word spoken or shown in any video using Smart Search technology.
Other features include adding quizzes to videos, creating playlists, trimming recordings, and organizing videos into course or shared folders.

Using Panopto at CSUN
Panopto is an online platform that can be used on a university-owned computer or your personal computer. For a video connected to a course, start in Canvas when possible. This opens the Panopto folder for that course and uses Canvas enrollment to manage access. You can also sign in directly to Panopto to use My Folder, shared folders, or videos that are not connected to a current course.
Zoom cloud recordings transfer directly to Panopto. When recording a Zoom meeting, select Record to the Cloud. A recording saved to the computer does not transfer automatically; cloud recording must be selected.

FAQs
For a video connected directly to the Canvas course, begin in Canvas when possible:
- Open the appropriate Canvas course.
- Select Panopto Video from the course navigation.
- Confirm that the correct course folder is displayed.
- Select Create to record a video or upload an existing file.
- After the video processes, update the title, review the captions, and add it to the appropriate Canvas page or module.
You can also sign in directly to the CSUN Panopto site. If the video belongs to a course, you may need to move it into the course folder before students can access it.

Review Panopto recording options
Select Create to choose the desktop application, Panopto Capture, or Upload media.
Panopto Capture records in a supported web browser and does not require an installation. It is a good choice for short lectures, webcam messages, demonstrations, and basic screen recordings.
The Panopto desktop application is available for Windows and Mac and provides more control over cameras, microphones, screens, presentations, and other recording sources.

No, recordings in Panopto are not automatically deleted. However, recordings that have not been viewed for 18 months are automatically archived. Creators can restore their archived recordings at any time. Restoration typically takes 24–28 hours but may take up to 72 hours in some cases.
Use the Canvas course folder for videos that belong to a course. Use My Folder for personal working files and content that is not ready to share. Shared department or project content may belong in an approved shared folder.
Before sharing a video, confirm that it is in the correct folder and that the intended viewers have access.
Yes. Panopto's editor can trim a recording, update the title and description, add chapters or quizzes, and review or correct captions. The editor is non-destructive, so edits can usually be adjusted later.

Open the video's sharing settings and choose an audience that matches the purpose of the video. For a course video, placing it in the correct Canvas course folder and embedding it in Canvas is usually the simplest option.

Panopto provides mobile apps for iOS and Android. You can also record with the device's camera app and upload the finished file to Panopto.

If Panopto Video is not visible, open Settings in the Canvas course and select the Navigation tab. Move Panopto Video into the visible course navigation and select Save.

If you begin from Panopto Video inside a Canvas course, a new recording or uploaded file can be placed directly in that course folder. If the video is already in My Folder or Meeting Recordings, move it into the correct course folder.

Upload video or audio files to Panopto
Panopto videos can be embedded anywhere the Canvas Rich Content Editor is available, including pages, assignments, discussions, and announcements. For instructional content, embedding the video on a Canvas page and placing that page in a module is usually the clearest option.
Before publishing, confirm that the video is stored in the course folder and preview the page using Canvas Student View.

You may schedule a new meeting or start a meeting that is already scheduled. When you select Record in Zoom, choose Record to the Cloud. A recording saved to the computer does not transfer to Panopto automatically.
After Zoom and Panopto finish processing the recording, look in My Folder > Meeting Recordings. Rename the video and move it into the appropriate Canvas course folder when students need access.
Always record to the cloud when you want the Zoom recording to transfer automatically to Panopto.

Unexpected short recordings can be created when a meeting uses automatic cloud recording and participants are allowed to enter before the host. Review the meeting's recording and participant-join settings, and remove recordings that are not needed.
If short recordings continue to appear unexpectedly, contact the Faculty Technology Center for help reviewing the meeting settings.
Panopto supports keyboard navigation, screen readers, viewer captions, and keyboard shortcuts. Content creators are still responsible for reviewing captions and making sure important visual information is also explained in the audio or surrounding text
Machine-generated captions are a useful starting point, but they can contain errors. Review names, technical terms, punctuation, speaker changes, and important sound information before assigning the video to students.
