CSUN Database Environments

IT provides database environments to the campus for application development, research, and to support various projects and business processes. The following database environments are provided:

  • Enterprise – The MySQL Enterprise database environment is geared toward campus departments and organizations developing or using applications used by multiple users and are dependent on the application’s availability as well as the data needing to be kept in a stable and secure environment. Departments have the option to be their own database administrator, fully responsible for security, performance and recovery. IT also provides a hosted instance and would be responsible for all aspects of the database.
  • Production – The Oracle production database environment is a mission-critical, campus-wide, high-availability environment for storing critical data that may be confidential or highly sensitive. Usage of this environment is reserved for high-volume applications.

Following are recommendations to determine which environment is appropriate for your needs.

Note: To access the Enterprise Database Environment from an off-campus location, you will need to use the VPN.

Faculty

For coursework or other classroom-related activities faculty may want to consider using the Enterprise database environment. Complete the Enterprise Database Environment - Access Request Form.

Campus Departments/Organizations

For departmental applications or data that contains sensitive information departments, you may want to consider using the Enterprise database environment. Contact the IT Help Center for assistance.

If your application and data is considered to be mission-critical, contains confidential information, requires high availability and is used by the campus community you should contact the IT Help Center to initiate a review to determine if the data should be in the Production database environment.
