2024 Cybersecurity Awareness Month

A jack-o-lantern and the words Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybersecurity Awareness Month, held annually in October, is a joint effort between the government and private sector to empower individuals in safeguarding their personal data against digital threats. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the event, which has gained global recognition.

The ongoing theme of Cybersecurity Awareness Month is Secure Our World, with the main messaging revolving around four key cybersecurity best practices for each of the upcoming 4 weeks:

  • Week 1 - Use Strong Passwords, learn the importance of strong passwords, how to create them, and the benefits of using a password manager to protect accounts.
  • Week 2 -Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and why it’s an essential safeguard against unauthorized access.
  • Week 3 - Recognizing & reporting phishing – still one of the primary threat actions used by cybercriminals today.
  • Week 4 - Update Your Software, stay safe through regular patching and updates. Installing updates on a regular basis and turning on automated updates.

As our reliance on technology grows, strengthening and adapting our cybersecurity practices is more crucial than ever, and CSUN will be posting weekly updates aligning to each of the four areas to enhance awareness of online safety for all CSUN students, staff, and faculty.
