Themed Living Community (TLC)

Students living in the TLCs unite around a special interest or a theme.

Benefits of living in a TLC:

Each community presents its own scheduled events, academic support and social activities. is lead by a resident advisor, who is a member of the community, and overseen by a a steering committee drawing from students, faculty, Student Housing staff and other campus staff.

In this highly collaborative structure, students drive their communities, set priorities, plan activities and identify opportunities to improve their academic and personal growth. Research shows that students who participate in TLCs are more academically successful and adjust better to college life.

How to apply:

You can apply for an TLC when completing your housing application.

Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience: The Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience Themed Living Community brings together students who are in their second year of college, or who have transferred to CSUN from another college. This community is a supportive and fun environment where you will find others who are in your experience. Being in your second year of college can often be a difficult one for many students. Before, there was a great deal of support and guidance for you and you probably had some less difficult classes. In the second year, you may feel out of the loop, and this can leave you feeling like you should have it all figured out. Classes also become more challenging in the second year and beyond.

As a new transfer student, you may experience similar challenges. You are not brand new to college, but you are certainly brand new to CSUN. You know what it takes to be successful in college, but you may not have friends here yet, and you don't necessarily know all the resources available at CSUN. This community puts these two populations together to create community and support.

Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to participate in social activities designed to let you explore your relationships with the people around you.

Requirements for participation

  • Submit and complete your Student Housing application by the designated deadline
  • Select the Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience community as your preference on your Student Housing application
  • Enroll full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Attend community standards and floor meetings
  • Be an active participant in the community
  • Be a second-year college student or a new transfer student.

If you have questions or would like more information regarding The Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience Themed Living Community, please contact the Student Coordinator for Learning Communities at llc.tlc@csun.edu or (818) 677-6532.
