Gender Inclusive Housing Community

What is Gender Inclusive Housing?

Gender Inclusive Housing allows for students to live with roommates and suitemates regardless of gender identity. Students who select Gender Inclusive Housing agree to live with and create a welcoming environment for students of any gender identity.  The Gender Inclusive Housing Community Living Agreement articulates expectations of the environment and must be completed before admission into GIH.  This includes but is not limited to: man, woman, trans, nonbinary and genderqueer/gender non-conforming.  CSUN Student Housing recognizes that same-sex room assignments are not ideal or appropriate for all students. Gender Inclusive Housing seeks to provide an environment that is welcoming to all gender identities and is not limited to the binary (male and female).

Who is eligible to sign up for Gender Inclusive Housing?

Any student who is eligible to live on campus is eligible to live in Gender Inclusive Housing.

Is Gender Inclusive Housing right for me?

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) exists with the explicit goal of providing a housing experience with a sense of belonging and community for trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer/gender non-conforming students, as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning students and allies of those communities.

Where is gender inclusive housing located on campus?

Gender inclusive housing is available in all residential room types.

How do I sign up for gender inclusive housing?

You will sign-up for Gender Inclusive Housing through the CSUN Student Housing Portal while completing your housing application.

  • Step 1: If you are creating an application for the first time with CSUN Student Housing you will be prompted to create an account.  In the process of creating the account, you will be prompted to select the option that corresponds with your gender identity.  At this prompt be aware that your selected gender identity (male, female, or non-binary) will be the gender identity of future roommates.
  • Step 2: After creating your profile, start the application via the Student Housing Portal accessible from the Student Housing and Residential Life. When you arrive at the Gender Inclusive Housing page of the application, you can opt-in to Gender Inclusive Housing.
  • Step 3: Complete the remainder of the application.
  • Step 4:  Complete the Gender Inclusive Housing Community Living Agreement available in the “Forms” section of the Student Hosing Portal.

What if I sign the Gender Inclusive Housing Community Living Agreement and then change my mind?

Students who select gender inclusive as their housing type on the housing application and later change their mind must contact Student Housing at housing@csun.edu and request to opt out of Gender Inclusive.

Once a room is selected, students will not be able to change their housing type (gendered or gender inclusive) in the housing portal. Students who select a room and then wish to change the type of housing they selected should email housing@csun.edu, and we will work with you to find a new assignment. Keep in mind that we will not be able to accommodate moves for entire groups and we may not be able to reassign students in the community of their choice. We strongly encourage students to be certain of their housing type decision (gendered or gender inclusive) prior to room selection.

Am I guaranteed to be in gender inclusive housing if I select that as my housing type?

As with all housing options, we do our best to assist students who wish to live in gender inclusive housing; however, we cannot guarantee availability. Nor can we guarantee availability in a student’s top choice(s) residential community. This is also the case for binary gendered housing.

What if my parents don’t want me to live in gender inclusive housing?

While parental consent is not required for gender inclusive housing, we do encourage students to discuss their intent to live in gender inclusive housing with their parents/guardians.

The California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Gender Inclusive Housing, is designed to provide a living environment welcoming to all gender identities; one not limited by the traditional understanding of gender as only male and female. Gender-inclusive housing allows for individuals to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth. This housing type was developed to better provide a supportive environment where all residents can feel safe in their housing assignment with respect to their gender identity and gender expression. Offering gender-inclusive housing is supportive of creating a more inclusive campus climate and community.

As a student selecting to live in Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH), I agree to follow the terms and conditions that are listed below. Please initial next to each numbered item, and sign and date the form.

Resources are available to all students in the event that a person believes that aspects of their living situation constitute a violation of these standards of conduct.
