H5P Transition

H5P is among several software licenses previously funded through the Federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that will not be renewed. After the license end date of September 20, 2025, CSUN faculty, staff, and students will no longer be able to access H5P through a campus license. Visit the 2025 HEERF Software Tools Transition webpage for additional background information and the full list of impacted tools.

Overview

H5P has enabled faculty to create a variety of interactive content, including quizzes, flashcards, and multimedia presentations. With the transition away from H5P, faculty are encouraged to explore multiple tools to replace specific interactive elements based on their instructional needs.

CSUN-Supported Alternatives

Because H5P provided such a wide variety of content types, there is no single replacement tool. The following alternatives can be used depending on your specific activity:

Canvas

  • Quizzes and Surveys: Canvas Quizzes are useful for straightforward assessments

Panopto

  • Video with Embedded Questions: Panopto supports adding quiz questions to videos, making it ideal for lecture videos with check-in points.

  • Analytics: Track interaction with Panopto’s analytics, though the quiz question types may differ from H5P.

Other Specialized Tools

  • Interactive Presentations: Tools like Google Slides and Poll Everywhere can be used for live engagement activities. Poll Everywhere allows for real-time polling and audience interaction, though it does not yet integrate directly with Canvas.

Transition Steps & Timeline

What to do now:

  • Review the types of interactive content you currently use in H5P and identify critical activities to replace.

  • Familiarize yourself with tools like Canvas Quizzes, Panopto, Google Slides, and Poll Everywhere to understand their functionality.

  • If considering Google Suite, request a CSUN Google account by contacting the IT Help Center.

  • If considering Poll Everywhere, request an account by sending an email to ftc@csun.edu

Before September 20, 2025:

  • Export and save any content you wish to keep from H5P.

  • Revise course content and/or assignments to integrate with your chosen alternative tool(s).
