Canvas Studio Transition
Canvas Studio is among several software licenses previously funded through the Federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that will not be renewed. After the license end date of June 30, 2025, CSUN faculty, staff, and students will no longer be able to access Canvas Studio through a campus license. Visit the 2025 HEERF Software Tools Transition webpage for background information and the full list of impacted tools
Overview
Canvas Studio has been widely used to upload, edit, and curate instructional videos within Canvas. To continue offering video content in your courses, we recommend transitioning to Panopto, CSUN’s primary platform for video creation, hosting, and sharing. Panopto offers many of the same features as Canvas Studio, as well as additional capabilities that enhance accessibility and interactivity. Review the resources on this page for guidance on how to get started.
CSUN-Supported Alternatives
Panopto: Primary Platform for Video Creation and Sharing
Panopto is the recommended replacement for those currently using Canvas Studio. It integrates with Canvas and provides tools for recording, editing, and sharing videos. Key features include:
-
Video Creation: Panopto has simple video and screen capture tools along with basic editing functionality, all in your internet browser of choice.
-
Interactive Elements: You can insert quiz questions, browsable webpages and PDFs, and add additional clips of your own or from YouTube.
-
An Accessible Viewing Experience: Time-stamped closed captions and a table of contents make it easy to search transcripts, allowing viewers to identify and jump to any section of your videos for review.
MyCSUNbox: Additional Content Storage Option
myCSUNbox is CSUN's secure cloud-based file storage and collaboration solution. While it does not provide the hosting or interactive features of Panopto, it is an alternative solution for storing videos you may not need to use immediately in your courses. Videos stored in myCSUNbox can be uploaded to Panopto later when needed.
