Guest Accounts

Sponsored Accounts

In order to further CSUN's mission of research, education, and collaboration, guest accounts may be granted to individuals seeking access to CSUN resources who are not students, staff or faculty. Sponsored accounts may be granted for a variety of reasons, including contractors who manage CSUN resources, volunteers, visiting faculty, special program attendee, visiting students, and external research collaborators. The sponsor is responsible for activity that occurs with a guest account.

For a person to receive a guest account, an active CSUN faculty or MPP staff member must sponsor the individual. Students, and other affiliates may not request sponsored accounts, and current employees and students may not be granted a guest account. An application is initiated by the sponsor and requires the person requesting the guest account to provide information to confirm the identity of the guest they are sponsoring.

A sponsor of a guest is responsible for the guest account and must supervise the use of the guest account to ensure it is not used to violate any laws or CSUN policies. If the account is no longer required, the sponsor must immediately notify the IT Help Center.

  • Guest accounts should be requested only for individuals who are not registered CSUN applicants, faculty, staff, auxiliary or students. Guest accounts must be sponsored by CSUN faculty or staff. The sponsor must be accessible via email and provide his/her electronic address on the form.
  • The guest account holder may not use CSUN software, network or services in ways that violate CSUN acceptable use policy. They may not use the account for any commercial purpose.

Centrally provided services that may be granted to the guest account include a user ID and access to wireless. Access to additional services such as SOLAR or email must go through the access approval process for the resource being requested.

In order to become sponsors, CSUN faculty and staff must read and agree to follow the terms and conditions, signing off that they accept the responsibilities associated with sponsorship. Sponsors are responsible for having a legitimate reason for requesting an account for a guest. Sponsors may be contacted by the Information Security Officer should their sponsored guest accounts be involved in inappropriate use.

Individuals receiving a sponsored account are responsible for complying with CSUN's policies as well as applicable laws and regulations. Should a person with a sponsored account violate CSUN policies or applicable laws, they will have their account terminated.

By default, university sponsored accounts will be given access for a period of six months, after which the sponsor may renew the access. If preferred, the sponsor can request shorter periods of access but never longer periods. Sponsors are encouraged to set the duration times for the shortest time possible, with the understanding that accounts may be renewed if continued access is needed.

Sponsors and sponsored guests will be notified 14 days prior to the sponsorship expiration date for renewal confirmation. Sponsored account access will be disabled on the account's expiration date if the sponsor takes no action.

Should a sponsor leave the university, the sponsored guest will be notified and have 7 days before their account is disabled. Sponsors may designate a fellow CSUN employee to become the sponsor of a guest account before their departure.

Revocation of Sponsored Accounts

A sponsored account's access is subject to immediate revocation by the Information Security Officer for CSUN policy violations at any time. If an account is revoked, it will be disabled immediately. These actions may occur without warning and for any of the following reasons: legal violations including DMCA violations, policy violations user abuse, lack of user response to administrative queries, incorrect user-provided information or lack of user activity.

The sponsor should complete the request form. Allow up to one day for processing.
