IRS Form 1098-T FAQs
Each student is prompted to give consent for the IRS 1098-T form electronically upon their first term registration through their MyCSUN portal.
The IRS 1098-T form is intended to help students and families in determining if they are eligible for an Education Tax Credit. The IRS 1098-T statements are available on or before January 31 for the prior tax year through your MyCSUN portal.
Electronic IRS 1098-T Statement Option: To continue to promote sustainability and our paperless processes, upon enrolling for classes, CSUN is offering all students an electronic IRS 1098-T form option for IRS federal reporting of the Education Tax Credit benefits. By consenting to receive an electronic form you will be able to view, print, and save the form via the myNorthridge portal (see "CAN I GET COPIES OF FORM IRS 1098-T FOR CURRENT AND PRIOR YEARS" below). You will not receive a paper form through the mail. Your consent will be on record until you withdraw your consent; at which time any future paper IRS 1098-T form will be mailed to the address listed on the University’s record.
Students may access their Electronic Form IRS 1098-T via their CSUN portal account any time after January 25th (estimated date).
The IRS 1098-Tax Form reports amounts paid for qualifies tuition and related expenses in Box 1 for the tax year (January-December).
Examples of Qualified Educational Expenses Include:
- Tuition fees - Resident/Nonresident
- Books, Equipment, Supplies (only if billed through student account)
- Associated Student Fees
- Instructionally-Related Activity Fees
- Student Union Fees
- Campus Quality Fees
- Health Facility Fees
- First-Time Freshman Orientation Fees
- Extended Learning Course Fee Having Academic Credits
Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses Do Not Include:
- Student Health Center Fees
- Health or Disability Insurance Fees
- Student Representation Fees
- Late Payment Fees
- IPP Admin Fee
- Dining/Meal Plan Charges
- Housing Charges
- Parking Permits and Transportation Fees
- Other Personal, Living or Family Expenses

BOX 5: Scholarship and Grants are reported in the tax year (January-December) that they were disbursed to the student's account.

Follow the steps below to view prior years Form IRS 1098-T, you must enable pop-ups within the web browser:

- Log into MyCSUN
- Go to the My Finances tab, click My Accounts
- Under the Student Account Essentials section, select IRS 1098-T Detail Inquiry
- Select the Tax Year hyperlink to view the IRS 1098-T Tuition Statement
NOTE: Charges and payments posted to your account can be obtained via the portal from your CSUN Student Account Information.
If you received this message while trying to access your Form IRS 1098-T online, it means that a form was not generated for you for the calendar year.
IRS 1098-T may not be issued for several reasons. IRS exceptions for not furnishing a IRS 1098-T are:
- Students who did not have qualified tuition and related expenses. This also applies if you dropped all classes during the full refund period.
- Students enrolled in non-degree programs.
No. The address shown on Form IRS 1098-T is irrelevant for IRS income tax filing purposes. The single most important information on the form is your social security number or individual taxpayer identification number.
Reporting to the IRS depends primarily on your SSN or ITIN. It is very important for you to have the correct information on file with the University. Please remit prior to the last day of instruction for the term.
Follow these steps to have a corrected Form IRS 1098-T generated:
Step 1: Complete a W-9s form. You can find the form at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9s.pdf. Please read and complete the form per the instructions and bring it to Admissions & Records in Person. You will also need your Social Security Card or Individual Taxpayer Identification letter (from the IRS) and your student ID (for identification purposes).
Step 2: If you have already corrected your social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) through Admissions & Records and your IRS 1098-T form is still incorrect, please contact Student Accounting by submitting a correction request no later than March 15th of the reporting tax year, via email at student.accounting@csun.edu.
