CSUN’s Temporary Emergency Housing program and Emergency Housing Grant Funds provide support to currently enrolled students experiencing homelessness, students who need longer-term housing stability support (e.g., Rapid Re-Housing), and/or students who need an emergency housing grant to prevent homelessness. Through the Housing Stability Support application, you can:

  1. Apply for Temporary Emergency Housing (T.E.H.): T.E.H. provides short-term emergency housing accommodations here on campus with CSUN Student Housing. CSUN T.E.H. accommodations are available for up to 20 days while students work with Basic Needs staff to identify strategies for longer term, affordable housing support (including Rapid Rehousing Programs).
  2. Apply for Emergency Housing Grant Funds: Emergency housing grants provide one-time funding support resources to students in need of emergency rental assistance or related housing needs and who may be at risk for becoming homeless given unforeseen hardships and/or financial challenges.
  3. Make an appointment with a Basic Needs staff member to explore housing stability concerns and identify resources available to support you.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Current CSUN undergraduate student enrolled in at least 6 units or graduate student enrolled in at least 3 units.
  • Be able to demonstrate urgent financial need (with supporting documentation where appropriate).
  • For Temporary Emergency Housing accommodations: student currently lacks safe, regular, and adequate night-time residence. This might look like sleeping on a friend's couch, living in one's car, park, or similar setting not intended for human habitation.
  • For Emergency Housing Grant Funds: submission of supporting documentation (to be identified by the Basic Needs staff depending on individual circumstances) may be required.

Application Process

  1. All applications must be submitted to the Basic Needs Office for review and approval. Housing Stability Support application can be found here.
  2. A staff member from the Basic Needs Office will reach out to you as quickly as possible upon receipt of your application, usually within 1-2 business days. Upon connecting with you, Basic Needs staff will further assess your situation by asking for more detailed information regarding your circumstances. Our staff respects your privacy, and this crucial information will be used to 1) ensure access to the most relevant and beneficial resources for you and 2) secure necessary information related to various program and/or emergency grant allocation approvals.
  3. If you receive and accept Temporary Emergency Housing accommodations, you will be expected to uphold the same Student Housing standards as all student residents. In addition:
    • A completed T.E.H. license agreement will be required
    • Stays of up to 20 nights will be permitted, with requests for additional days requiring approval from the Interim Assistant Director for Basic Needs.
    • During your stay within T.E.H., you will be expected to communicate and meet regularly with Basic Needs Office staff, as we assist you in identifying longer-term housing solutions.
  4. If approved for Emergency Housing Grant Funds, you will be working with Basic Needs Office staff to facilitate the submission of required documents to the CSUN Financial Aid Office and processing of request for funds. You will also be expected to communicate and meet as needed with Basic Needs Office staff to assist you in achieving your longer-term housing stability goals.
