Master's Programs
The Department of Secondary Education offers the Master of Arts degrees in the six areas shown below. Each degree program is designed to prepare the secondary teacher for advancement as master teacher, supervising teacher, subject matter teaching specialist, or department chairperson. All programs are 30 units.
Master of Arts in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction
Designed to follow immediately CSUN’s Preliminary Single-Subject Credential Program but can also be taken as a standalone. Students examine current national and discipline-based educational issues, evaluate and apply theory and best practices in secondary curriculum and assessment, and develop a classroom-research project.
Master of Arts in Educational Technology
Designed to prepare teachers, technology coordinators, technology educators/trainers, and software developers to implement current technology tools in education and evaluate future, emergent technologies. Students develop their technology skills and knowledge of how to apply technology in the classroom, including developing and using educational multimedia, creating interactive software and educational websites, and assessing the impact of classroom innovations.
Master of Arts in Secondary English Education
Students learn innovative English Language Arts teaching practices; acquire greater fluency with educational technologies; investigate current research in English Language Arts teaching and learning and how it translates into practice; conduct applied classroom-based research; deepen their knowledge of broad issues, policies, and controversies that impact schools in general and English Language Arts teaching in particular; and develop as leaders in English Language Arts education through presentations and participation in professional organizations and support networks.
Master of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education
Students learn innovative mathematics-teaching practices; acquire greater fluency with educational technologies; investigate current research in mathematics teaching and learning and how it translates into practice; conduct applied classroom-based research; deepen their knowledge of broad issues, policies, and controversies that impact schools in general and mathematics teaching in particular; and develop as leaders in mathematics education through presentations and participation in professional organizations and support networks.
Master of Arts in Multicultural and Multilingual Education in Secondary Schools
Intended for secondary and other educators who work with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The program is designed to broaden students’ knowledge of ESL, bilingual, and multicultural education; develop research and leadership skills in ESL, bilingual, and multicultural education; and develop skills and knowledge for effectively working with students and families of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Master of Arts in Secondary Science Education
Students experience and implement innovative science-teaching practices; acquire greater fluency with educational technologies; investigate current research in science teaching and learning and how it translates into practice; conduct applied classroom-based research; deepen their knowledge of broad issues, policies, and controversies that impact science teaching and schools in general; and develop as science-education leaders through presentations and participation in professional organizations and support networks.

Find the appropriate applications for your program on the individual program page.
Students eligible to apply for graduation will receive an email from the Office of Graduate Studies with information about how to complete the online Application for Graduation. To be eligible for graduation, students must be Classified and have completed 18 units OR be Classified and be in progress of completing 18 units. This application will initiate a graduation evaluation, which advises students of existing requirements for their degree. Graduate students are required to be enrolled during the semester in which the degree is to be awarded.
Graduation Application Deadlines:
- For Fall graduation, apply by September 1st.
- For Spring or Summer graduation, apply by February 1st.
When a Master’s thesis is involved, the student must follow the Thesis/Graduate Project Timeline provided by Graduate Studies.
