Internship Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

Applicants must be enrolled in an APA or CPA Accredited counseling or clinical psychology doctoral program or their program must be actively pursuing APA/CPA Accreditation (with site visit completed or an approved date set).

Prior to the application deadline, applicants must complete 500 direct contact intervention hours (virtual okay), and also their comprehensive/qualifying exams. Applicants are required to complete all coursework, supervised practica experience, and dissertation or doctoral project proposals (when applicable) prior to the onset of internship. All applicants must be certified as ready for internship by their doctoral programs.

In addition to having solid clinical skills, successful applicants demonstrate a strong interest in providing culturally-informed psychological services to diverse clients. While not a requirement, it is helpful when candidates have group therapy and/or outreach experience. Preference is given to candidates who have interest and experience in university counseling center work. Comparable work experience is also acceptable. Strong applicants should have constructive interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals.

Application Requirements

Does the program require that applicants have received a minimum number of hours of the following at time of application? If Yes, indicate how many:

Direct Contact Hours
Direct Contact Type
Total Direct Contact Intervention Hours Yes Amount: 500
Total Direct Contact Assessment Hours No Amount: 0

Describe any other required minimum criteria used to screen applicants:

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily as a condition of employment at California State University, Northridge. Background screenings will be conducted after the Match. Applicants who match to our program but do not successfully pass the background check will be dismissed from the internship (see APPIC Match Policy).
