Our Founder

Dr. Jean E. Daniels

Dr. Jean E. Daniels
(1942 to 2018)

Dr. Jean Daniels, Departments of Social Work and Sociology, began her employment at CSUN with two graduate degrees, a Master in Social Work from Howard University and a Master in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a doctorate in social welfare from UCLA.  During her time at CSUN, Dr. Daniels continued to build the Social Welfare Option in the Sociology Department as its Coordinator. She then served as founder and first Director of the Department of Social Work.  She led the Social Work Department through its first cohort of 27 students and continued to help it grow until her retirement.  Dr. Daniels’ contributions to the National Association of Social Work’s San Fernando Valley Chapter were tireless.  She was recognized for her efforts when she was named Social Worker of the Year in 2002 by this California chapter of National Association of Social Workers.  She published, presented at professional conferences, and displayed leadership in the areas of group work, gerontology (specifically elderly African-American women), international social work, and Afrocentric social work practice.  Dr. Daniels mentored numerous students and faculty.  The Social Work Department honors her yearly by giving the Jean E. Daniels Award to outstanding graduating MSW student leaders.
