Browser Support Statement

"Current Version Minus One"

All web applications built and maintained by Student Affairs IT are designed and tested to work on the most current version of major desktop web browsers*, minus one version.

Why?

  • Security. Each new version patches bugs and vulnerabilities. An outdated browser is an unsafe browser!
  • Accessibility. Inclusive features are no longer an afterthought, but are built in “from the get-go.”
  • Features. Modern web apps do a lot more than display text and images; get more out of your browsing experience!
  • Support. Companies do not support their products forever.**
  • Free. Updating your browser costs nothing except a little time.
  • Resources. We have limited resources and cannot support every possible browser version. A balanced approach like this provides a good user experience, while providing "coverage" for the overwhelming majority of our visitors.

* SAIT supports desktop versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari. A "major version" refers to a full numeric release, like 8.0 and 9.0 (not minor releases like 8.1.x and 8.2.x). If you're using an older OS like Windows XP, you may not be able to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9. If you find yourself in this particular group, you can upgrade to either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. SAIT is working on an automated testing plan that will eventually include mobile browsers, but we aren’t quite there yet.

** You may be able to maintain and drive a "classic" car forever. However, it won’t have the safety and convenience features of the latest model; parts become scarce and expensive; eventually, you can’t take it to the manufacturer for servicing; and so on. At some point, it just makes more sense to get a new car. Unlike browsers, you can't go to a car dealership and pick up the newest, safest and fastest car for nothing. Wouldn't it be great if this analogy worked that way too?
