The Department of Political Science provides both depth and breadth. Our top-notch faculty teach a wide range of courses. You'll have the flexibility to focus your classes on your areas of interest. You'll also receive in-depth knowledge of political theory. Your courses will cover American politics, international relations, comparative politics, public law and more.

Internship Opportunities

Apply for unique internships in Los Angeles Superior Court or Washington DC. In our Judicial Internships, you assist a judge in his or her duties. You will observe courtroom operations and assist the court while earning class credit.

In the DC Internship Program, you will study in our nation's capital for a semester. You will work in congressional offices, advocacy organizations or law firms. You will also earn class credit that will count toward your degree.

Study Abroad

Make your political science classes come to life through studying overseas. The department encourages you to experience political systems in foreign countries firsthand. You can fulfill degree requirements with CSU International Program Study Centers. Consult your departmental advisor or the campus International Programs advisor for more information.

What You'll Learn

With a minor in political science, you will learn different political theories. You'll learn about both American and global policies. You'll develop research and writing skills. You'll recognize historical patterns and become an engaged member of the community.

In your introductory classes, you will study:

  • American political institutions or American national, state and local governments
  • Comparative government or international relations

Students select three courses each from both Domestic Politics and Policy courses and Global Politics and Policy courses.

In the Domestic Politics and Policy courses, you will study American political theory. You can take classes on:

  • Public administration and public policy
  • Congress and the legislative process
  • Elections and voting behavior

In the Global Politics and Policy courses, you will study political systems from around the world. You can choose from courses such as:

  • Politics of Latin America
  • United States foreign policy
  • International law
