Food Recovery Network
About
Students at over 230 university and college campuses across the US have become part of the Food Recovery Network (FRN), collecting unused food from their dining halls and donating it to food pantries and shelters. FRN was originally launched in September 2011, by 3 college students at the University of Maryland who noticed a lot of food from their dining hall being thrown out. They started a small team to help fight food waste, and by the end of the school year they had recovered 30,000 meals. Throughout the years, students from various colleges have met to grow the FRN, with a mission of creating recovery programs on every college campus in the county. In May of 2013, the Sodexo Foundation provided FRN with funding to hire full-time staff and transition into a professional nonprofit organization. Now, FRN has chapters in over 44 states, with more than 3 million pounds of food recovered so far. FRN has swept the nation and made higher education the very first sector where food recovery is the norm.
