Vern and Bonnie Bullough Collection on Sex and Gender

The Vern and Bonnie Bullough Collection on Sex and Gender is located in the University Library at CSUN. It was established by former CSUN faculty member Vern Bullough, who donated his personal research library starting in 1973, and continued making donations through the 1990s. Its purpose is to document social attitudes and studies of sex and gender from ancient times to the present, in support of CSUN curricula and research. Bullough also established an endowment that supports the library in continuing to build the collection, and funds special programming relating to sex, gender, and the campus community.

The collection is maintained for research and educational purposes and is comprised of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and archival materials covering such topics as cross-dressing, gender roles in various time periods, queer communities in Los Angeles, prostitution, the trans community, children and gender, nudism, gender and medicine, fetishism, and pornography. The majority of materials in the Bullough Collection are in Special Collections and Archives, though there are some items in other parts of the library.

June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives

The June L. Mazer Archives is a vital Lesbian and feminist community resource committed to sharing our history across generations, ethnicity, race, and personal belief systems by collecting, preserving and making available unique memorabilia in a safe and welcoming environment. It is dedicated to collecting, protecting, and preserving lesbian and feminist history and culture, and strives to pave the way for future generations to understand more fully their own identity and history and help maintain this vital link to their own past.

ONE Archives

ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is the largest repository of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) materials in the world. Founded in 1952, ONE Archives houses millions of archival items including periodicals, books, films, videos, audio recordings, photographs, artworks, organizational records, and personal papers. ONE Archives has been a part of the University of Southern California Libraries since 2010. It is the mission of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries to collect, preserve, and make accessible LGBTQ historical materials while promoting new scholarship on and public awareness of queer histories.

L.A. as Subject Directory

L.A. as Subject is a research alliance dedicated to preserving and improving access to the archival material of Los Angeles history. Much of the city’s history is preserved in libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions. Other valuable and unique collections – those that reveal the stories of neighborhoods, families, and influential Angelenos – are scattered across Southern California, curated by smaller institutions and individual enthusiasts. L.A. as Subject seeks to help researchers know what materials are available, where they are located, and how to access them.
Many cultural repositories around Los Angeles preserve documentation of queer communities in the city, though they are not always exclusively dedicated to that subject area. Search the membership directory to discover where these archives and collections are located throughout the city.
