Program in Queer Studies

Welcome Statement

The Queer Studies (QS) Program at CSUN, launched in 2008, is a vibrant and growing minor in the College of Humanities. It offers an interdisciplinary approach, questioning normative constructions of sexuality and gender. Students can double count courses in GE and their major. The minor consists of 3 core and 3 elective courses, preparing students to engage with LGBTQIA+ communities and issues.

The program focuses on the histories, contemporary experiences, and community-based knowledges of various gender positionalities. It explores intersections of heterosexism, heteronormativity, and transphobia with national, ethnic, racial, class, and other identities. QS fosters a community of learners grappling with diversity, gender, sexuality, and social justice.

QS at CSUN provides an academic home for studying the conditions shaping our understanding of sexuality and gender variation. It also encourages the generation of new, resistant theories and practices. The program offers an undergraduate minor, sponsors courses, organizes lecture series, and engages students, faculty, and larger Los Angeles communities.
