Department of Philosophy

Welcome to Philosophy at CSUN

Philosophy is the only discipline that investigates everything. It is also the only discipline that challenges everything, including itself. This is what distinguishes philosophy from the sciences, history, literature, and the arts. Although philosophy and these other disciplines share some of the same goals—like scientists, philosophers want to uncover the nature of reality; like historians, philosophers want to understand where we come from; and like artists, philosophers want to stimulate novel questions about human experience—philosophy alone aims to see how these disciplines are connected and to understand what makes them possible.

The Department of Philosophy at CSUN offers a unique, flexible, innovative curriculum, emphasizing the diversity of our field. It also emphasizes skills (like critical thinking, ethical reasoning, logical analysis, persuasive writing, and careful reading) that prepare you for a wide range of careers. As you practice and refine these skills in your courses, you'll investigate questions of fundamental human importance: What is consciousness? What does it mean to be human? How should we organize society?

Ask Questions, Challenge Assumptions, Think Critically, and Prepare for your Future

Interested in a career in law, government, consulting, education, or community organizing? Philosophy may be the right choice for you: Philosophy majors routinely outperform other graduates on graduate school entrance exams like the LSAT, GMAT, and GRE. And the mid-career earnings of philosophy majors is higher, on average, than that of graduates in Business, Marketing, or Nursing. As a low-cost, low-unit major, that makes your philosophy degree an excellent value.

Of course, philosophy is not only useful for your career: Being reflective about your beliefs, values, and decisions is expected of citizens participating in a democratic society, and philosophy can help hone and encourage those skills. It can also lead to a more fulfilling and interesting life. By prompting reflection on your values, on the meaning of existence, and on what it means to be human in the world, philosophy (as Henry David Thoreau once put it) is a way to "live deliberately."

Not sure where to start? That's ok! Take our interactive quiz and we will pair you with some of our courses.
