The CTEL program empowers credentialed teachers with the expertise and skillset necessary to work effectively with English learners in K-12 classrooms in California.
Why Get Your CTEL Authorization?
The CTEL program is specifically designed for credentialed teachers who are seeking the English Learner Supplemental Authorization. This expertise and skillset will give you the tools necessary to effectively work with English learners in K-12 classrooms in California. With increasing numbers of English Learners in California, many districts require this authorization to ensure that their teachers are qualified to teach all of their students.
Why Get Your CTEL Authorization at CSUN?
A Large Program
CSUN has one of the largest public university, education credentialing programs in the state of California.
As a result of our size, we can offer specialized instruction in the teaching of special education in over a dozen specific subjects — rather than the generalized methods at many institutions.
Foundation of Knowledge and Research
At CSUN, we've built our programs on knowledge derived from sound theories and rigorous research. You'll be encouraged to take time for reflection, problem-solving and collaboration. Our ongoing research is paired with continuous support for you, your schools and your communities.
Multicultural Focus
Our nation is home to multicultural school populations. This means CSUN focuses on preparing you for success in diverse settings. By emphasizing data-based assessments, counseling, consultation, prevention and intervention with a sociological perspective, you'll be equipped to develop accepting and effective learning environments for your students.
What You'll Learn
The CLET program includes lessons in:
- Language structure and use
- First and second language development and their relationship to academic achievement
- Assessment of English learners
- Foundations of English language and literacy development and content instruction
- Cultural diversity and its relationship to academic achievement and culturally inclusive instruction
When you complete this program, you will be authorized to provide English Language Development (ELD) and Specially-Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) in classrooms from kindergarten to grade 12.
