Biology

Minor

Biology provides the key to understanding the building blocks of life. As a Biology minor, you'll learn to think like a scientist while exploring the life sciences.

Why Study Biology?

To understand biology is to understand life itself — and the endless ways all life on the planet is connected.

Every day, biologists explore those connections, solve mysteries and help build a better planet. Some use biology as a stepping stone to a medical degree, or work in a clinical laboratory. But you could also do fieldwork, where you'll explore the relationship between disease and environment. You could study how climate change affects not just individual species, but the ecosystem itself. You might even find more efficient ways to grow crops.

Why Study Biology at CSUN?

CSUN knows that learning is best done hands-on, which is why we place such a high value on experience. Our programs include opportunities for students to conduct research at our own field station on nearby Santa Catalina Island and to participate in our exclusive Stem Cell Training Program, which can lead to careers in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.

As a Biology minor, you'll work side-by-side with faculty devoted to working with undergraduates. Whether you're participating in joint research projects or mastering lab techniques, you'll learn to approach problems from a new perspective, whatever your major.

What You'll Learn

As a Biology minor, you'll take introductory courses in chemistry and biology, followed by more in-depth exploration of evolutionary biology and genetics. With that foundation in place, you'll have the chance to take electives in topics including entomology, plant biology, human physiology and more.

CSUN students have access to ecosystems as diverse as oceans and deserts within driving distance of campus. Marine biology classes, for example, often go to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and to Santa Catalina Island.
