</p><p><a href="https://nikolehannahjones.com/" target="_blank">Nikole Hannah-Jones</a>, author and Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times staff writer, made an appearance at CSUN as part of a series of Black History Month events on campus. She was interviewed by CSUN faculty members about her work “<a href="https://1619education.org/about-1619-project" target="_blank">The 1619 Project</a>” that has re-framed discussions about slavery in the United States.</p>
<p>Hannah-Jones, CSUN Africana Studies Chair Marquita Gammage and College of Health and Human Services Interim Dean Mechelle Best spoke before an audience at the University Student Union on Feb. 10, 2023.</p>
<p>Hannah-Jones, who covers racial injustice for the New York Times Magazine, discussed her book that commemorates the 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery in what became the United States. “The 1619 Project,” that began as a special issue of the New York Times Magazine, then expanded to include a podcast, an anthology and a children’s book, examines the long-lasting repercussions of slavery.</p>
<p>“This is not just a job for me, it’s work I felt called to do. To repay a debt to my ancestors,” Hannah-Jones said.</p>
