Course Description
English 113AB, English 114AB, and English 115 are all titled "Approaches to University Writing." Each is a course in expository writing designed for Freshmen and transfer students, and each is equivalent to the other. Class placement depends on students' scores on variety of tests. Students enrolled in "Approaches to University Writing" will:

Demonstrate competence in university writing;

Demonstrate competence in critical reading;

Demonstrate the ability to use rhetorical strategies;

Understand writing as a recursive process;

Demonstrate the ability to use conventions of format, structure, style and language appropriate to the purpose of a written text;

Demonstrate the ability to incorporate and document library and online resources appropriately.
All of these courses focus on helping students write effective academic English, find evidence to develop their ideas, organize and present material clearly, logically, and persuasively, and to read multicultural expository prose critically and insightfully. In addition, all of these courses include an information technology component that will enable students to incorporate new media into their writing.
English 113AB "Approaches to University Writing" is a two semester expository writing course. This version of the course includes two additional tutorial hours per week, under the direction of a Supplemental Instructional Leader, which earns one unit of credit and is graded as Pass/Fail.
Enrollment in English 113B requires successful completion of English 113A.
English 114AB "Approaches to University Writing" is a two semester expository writing course.
Enrollment in English 114B requires successful completion of English 114A.
English 115 "Approaches to University Writing" is a one semester expository writing course.
