Subject Privacy for ETD

A statement on student and subject privacy for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs):

It is the responsibility of CSUN Office of Graduate Studies and the University Library under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) as well as the American Library Association's Code of Ethics to protect student and patron privacy to the fullest extent possible. ETDs, a record of student research and a requirement for graduation in many master's and doctoral programs at CSUN, are considered by the university to be publications. As such, even if subject to temporary embargo, they are intended for eventual public distribution. Though ETDs do not necessarily fall within the scope of FERPA, students are nevertheless advised to consider whether the information contained within their theses or dissertations would be harmful or embarrassing to themselves or to their subjects. CSU ScholarWorks, the open access repository for ETDs, follows a documented takedown policy. In the event of privacy concerns or copyright violation issues, CSU ScholarWorks will limit access to documents or remove them from the online collection entirely if a review demonstrates a legitimate risk to student or subject privacy and/or safety.
