CSUN's Mobile Campus Response (MCR) Team
Emergency Mental Health Assistance
University Counseling Services and the Department of Police Services have co- partnered to provide a care-based approach to those who may be experiencing a mental health emergency on the CSUN campus with the establishment of a Mobile Campus Response (MCR) Team.
What is the MCR Team?
The Mobile Campus Response (MCR) Team provides a rapid response in-the-field to members of the CSUN community (students, employees, and campus visitors) who need immediate assistance and/or are unable to access assistance on their own due to a mental health crisis or emergency. We operate within a co-responder model and the team includes a mental health response coordinator, a mental health response assistant, and a non-uniformed specially trained law enforcement professional from CSUN’s Department of Police Services (DPS).
Mission
The Mobile Campus Response (MCR) Team’s mission is to provide compassionate, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed care and support in-the-field to members of the CSUN campus community who are experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency. This care will include supportive services intended to stabilize individuals in crisis (e.g., crisis intervention, de-escalation, safety planning), and assist them in connecting to support and resources (both on- and off-campus). Through these efforts, we strive to reduce visits to the emergency department, involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, and traumatic encounters with police for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency, particularly those from communities who historically have not had positive experiences with police.
What Services Does the MCR Team Provide?
Crisis/Emergency Response: The Mobile Campus Response Team responds in-person to individuals in crisis who are experiencing distressing symptoms (e.g., danger of hurting or killing self or others, severe anxiety or panic attacks, sudden death of a loved one, psychosis, etc.) and are unable to call or safely get to mental health resources (e.g., University Counseling Services, Employee Assistance Program, etc.)
Mental Health Wellness Checks: provides phone, virtual, or in-person check-in’s with individuals in response to a specific mental health concern to ensure safety and well-being
* MCR Team cannot respond to any situations involving violence, a weapon, or domestic violence; medical emergencies; substance abuse emergencies; classroom management or conduct/disciplinary issues.
For classroom management or conduct issues, please contact Dr. Zeina Otaky Ramirez, Associate Dean of Students, Director of Student Conduct and Ethical Development, at (818) 677-2391 or zeina.ramirez@csun.edu
