Mathematics for Teaching

Major

Teaching math isn't just a rewarding career. It's also in high demand. Our Mathematics for Teaching B.A. options can lead to a teaching credential and a job in a middle school or high school classroom.

Why Study Mathematics for Teaching?

Since 2015, California has spent billions of dollars to recruit new teachers. But a teacher shortage still persists, and math teachers are in especially high demand. Some school districts are even offering signing bonuses for new hires.

Job security is one good reason to consider a teaching career. The biggest reward comes from helping students learn a subject they'll use for the rest of their lives. Most careers at the top of best-job lists rely heavily on math — and these days, most other jobs demand number sense.

Why Study Mathematics for Teaching at CSUN?

Build Confidence in the Classroom

You'll build experience teaching in a middle or high school classroom, but you'll never be alone. Experienced teachers will guide you at all times. In the credential program, you'll observe a single class period daily for one semester, and then teach three classes daily during the second semester. You'll get regular feedback about your teaching practice, so by the time you graduate, you'll be ready to be on your own.

By Your Side

Learn about career opportunities and work through licensing requirements for your own math classroom from our specialized academic and professional advisors.

Best of Both Worlds

As a Mathematics for Teaching major, you'll work with faculty in both the Department of Mathematics and the Michael D. Eisner College of Education. Both are leaders in their fields. Our math faculty conduct research funded by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Security Agency (NSA) and the Office of Naval Research. And Eisner is the largest public college of education in California.

Get a Running Start

CSUN's Mathematics for Teaching program gives you the chance to begin teaching immediately after you graduate. If you graduate from the Four-Year Integrated (FYI) Math or Junior-Year Integrated (JYI) Math programs, you'll receive a preliminary single subject credential along with your degree.

What You'll Learn

Students in the Mathematics for Teaching B.A. options can find their way into a middle or high school classroom via several routes. No matter which you choose, though, you'll get hands-on teaching experience while at CSUN.

If you begin college knowing you want to teach math at the secondary school level, this option will set you on that path. Graduates receive a B.A. in Mathematics as well as a Preliminary Single Subject Credential, which is required to teach in California.

Curriculum

The JYI option is aimed at transfer students who are eligible to complete their major in mathematics at the same time they prepare to earn a Preliminary Single Subject Credential, which is required to teach in California.

You'll complete almost all of the same classes as students in the FYI program, while studying full- or part-time. Graduates receive a B.A. in Mathematics as well as the preliminary credential.

Curriculum

This option is geared toward students who are not eligible for the integrated programs or prefer to keep their options open as to when they pursue their teaching credential.

Students completing this option must enroll in a post-graduate teacher preparation program before receiving a Preliminary Single Subject Credential.
