Why Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies of Africa?

With an Interdisciplinary Studies of Africa (ISA) minor, you'll receive a rich understanding of African culture, history and politics. This program is a starting point for further education in fields such as art, economics, health and the social sciences. You will acquire a greater knowledge of the African ways of life and systems of thought, preparing you to become a better global citizen. The ISA minor is especially well-suited for those who want to work in international business, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), healthcare, the Foreign Service and the State Department.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The ISA minor draws from a variety of departments across CSUN. It includes fields as varied as history, religious studies, anthropology and urban studies. You will study under faculty who are experts in their fields. You'll learn about African music, art, history, political science and more. You will receive a solid foundation in African culture and current affairs to prepare you for your future career path.

Annual Symposium

Every year, the Interdisciplinary Studies of Africa minor program presents the Africa Studies Symposium. Scholars, students and community members gather to discuss Africa and its future. The speakers present their research on a wide range of disciplines. Past topics have included "The Arts of Africa in the Contemporary World" and "Innovations in Africa." You'll grow in your knowledge of Africa and also find networking opportunities.

What You'll Learn

In the Interdisciplinary Studies of Africa minor, you will gain a broad perspective of the African experience, history and contributions to world culture. In this flexible minor, you will choose two lower-division classes and four upper-division classes to complete your program. We strongly encourage you to meet a member of the ISA program committee or the coordinator of the ISA minor to plan out your course program to ensure it fits your needs.
