Why Study Geology?

Geology gives us a window into Earth's most distant past. Thanks to geologists, we're able to comprehend how the very world around us emerged. But it's a science that also helps us grapple with some of today's most pressing issues. Geology can help us discover minerals and resources that can provide clean, renewable energy sources. As we make land-use decisions, geology helps us protect water supplies. And it also informs us how to withstand the destructive forces of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and wildfires.

Geology is an ideal discipline if your interests span multiple subjects. As a science, it incorporates chemistry, biology and physics. In building a broad view of the planet, you'll learn to approach problems from multiple angles.

Finding Hidden GEMS

We're committed to bringing more voices to geology. Our GEMS Program — Improving the Geology Experience for Minority Students — is one way we're doing that. We're increasing representation among Hispanic American, Latinx, Black and Native American students through peer mentorship, career advising and other efforts.

Extraordinary Opportunities

Our best students qualify for the B.S. Honors Program. If you meet the criteria, you'll have the opportunity to complete an intensive research experience under individual faculty guidance. Graduates also get an honors designation on their academic record.

What You'll Learn

Every Geology major at CSUN builds the skills and knowledge necessary to embark on a technical career or to enter a graduate program in the field. You'll take required classes in chemistry, physics and calculus. Other requirements depend on whether you focus on geology or geophysics.

Geology studies the structure of the planet, with an emphasis on examining physical features such as rocks. Geophysics focuses on natural phenomena on and below the Earth's surface.

This program allows the most flexibility in your studies. Graduates are prepared for technical careers in geoscience and advanced studies in graduate school. Depending on your interests, you can specialize in a particular geoscience through electives. In addition to a capstone, you'll take a summer fieldwork school. Classes are offered in geoforensics, paleontology, tectonics, seismology and more.

Curriculum

The geophysics option incorporates an intensive focus on mathematics and physics, preparing you for careers that require backgrounds in these subjects. Graduates are prepared for technical careers in geophysics or advanced study in graduate school.
