Learn how to analyze geographic data and create maps in our advanced labs. Complement your major with a minor in geographic information science.
Why Minor in Geographic Information Science?
By studying geographic information science, you will learn to analyze geographic data. You will study the ins and outs of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to input data and create advanced maps. Your work will capture data about people, such as population, income or education level. You can also map where factories are in relation to wetlands and rivers to ensure that water supplies stay clean. Your knowledge will be applicable to many businesses, researchers and government agencies.
Why Study Geographic Information Science at CSUN?
Real-world Skills
CSUN's Geographic Information Science program will help you pursue a career in this highly technical field. You will be adept at using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through practice in our labs and in the field. Our faculty will share their expertise in many GIS applications, including health geography, spatial demography and urban planning. They will teach you the skills you need to be ahead of the curve.
Cutting-edge Technology
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies houses two state-of-the-art geospatial computer labs. You'll access the latest GIS software on desktop units and iPad devices. This will help you gain experience in both lab and outdoor settings. You'll be able to practice this technology in classes and for your own research projects.
Complement your Major
Learning how to use GIS can be a big boost to your major and future career. Because GIS organizes data by geographic location, it has practical uses for many industries. These fields include:
- Urban planning
- Health geography
- Telecommunication services
- Accident analysis
- Environmental impact analysis
- Agricultural analysis
What You'll Learn
As a Geographic Information Science minor, you'll study Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping and analysis techniques. With your minor, you will be prepared to collect and analyze data to advise environmental and building projects.
In your foundation courses, you will learn geography concepts while choosing one course that interests you. These include:
- The physical environment
- Weather
- Introduction to human geography
- World geography
In your upper-division courses, you will take classes on GIS methods:
- Introduction to GIS
- Maps and graphics
- Intermediate GIS
- Advanced GIS
Then you will choose application courses to focus on the areas that most interest you. The classes include:
- Map and imagery interpretation
- Remote sensing using drones and satellites
- Human and cultural applications in GIS
- Environmental and physical applications in GIS
- Geospatial project management
- Spatial database management
- GIS automation and customization
- Web-based GIS applications
- Digital cartography
You may also choose to complete an internship in a public agency or private organization or participate in a senior seminar.
