Art Education

Minor

Enhance your creative skills and open up career opportunities. A minor in art education can provide valuable experience for future educators in learning to teach art.

Why Minor in Art Education?

Minoring in art education creates a strong foundation in a variety of 2D, 3D, traditional and digital media while enhancing teaching skills, exploring your creativity, and opening up future career opportunities.

Why Study Art Education at CSUN?

CSUN’s Art Education minor provides a strong foundation in the principles and concepts of art for two types of students.

Track I is made up of undergraduate students who want to become general or special education teachers in the future. You use this minor to work toward an extra certification in art, which is called a Supplementary Authorization in Art. This is open to all students except those who are already majoring in art.

Track II is aimed at undergraduate students who are already majoring in art and want to become art teachers. This minor will help you learn how to teach art in schools and other settings for students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. This track is only open to students who are majoring in art within the Department of Art.

Students are able to access state-of-the-art facilities and study in close proximity to Los Angeles’ thriving creative industries.

What You’ll Learn

An art education minor will provide you with a foundation for future teaching experiences. Students will learn how to develop an art curriculum and explore approaches to teaching art in CSUN’s art education courses:

  • Studio art skills
  • Art history
  • Art education (content-based curriculum, educational theories and philosophies)
  • Visual, critical, and digital literacy
  • Cross-cultural connections

Track I: Non-Art Major Students

For non-art majors, Track I provides useful training toward applying for a Supplementary Authorization in Art for students planning to enter the Multiple Subject credential program.

Track II: Students with an Art Major

For art majors, Track II boosts preparation of art content and pedagogy for teaching art in PK-12 schools for students planning to enter the Single Subject in Art credential program.

Careers & Outcomes

The Art Education program is a valuable addition to your academic portfolio, either with or without a major in art. Students will understand the foundation behind teaching art to K-12 students if pursuing a credential in teaching.

Non-art majors may have the opportunity to add art education as a subject authorization to a multiple subject teaching credential. For art majors who are on track to enter in the Single Subject in Art credential program, the art education minor prepares them to understand the methods and practices of teaching art.

Common career paths for graduates with an art education minor include:

  • Art teacher for Pre-K to 12 education
  • Museum educator
  • Arts administrator
  • Community arts organizer
  • Artist
