Jewish Studies is for Everyone!

The field of Jewish studies draws on a variety of academic disciplines to explore and understand the experience of Jews across the world. In the Jewish Studies Program, students engage with Jewish thought, history, and values through classroom discussion, experiential learning, and community engagement. Through our courses and other programs, we offer students both intellectual training and hands-on skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

A drone camera captures the sunset over CSUN's final Commencement ceremony of 2022.

"In my time at CSUN, there have been a few special classes that stand out as truly mind-changing. Jewish Studies is truly the dark horse at CSUN; most of the classes that I consider to be influential have been my Jewish Studies classes. It has been both a privilege and a thrill to experience classes like JS 427, a class that challenged my views (for the better) and forced me to find better academic footing on how I perceive Israel and its place in the world. Another ... was JS 390 CS, the community service course. I enjoyed this class not only because of the scholarship, but because my service applied to my major (Business Law), making it an activity I really looked forward to. It also opened up unbelievable opportunities and expanded my employable/marketable skill set. The JS department is small but the students are diverse. As someone who is Jewish and observant, I really enjoyed seeing people who were unfamiliar with Judaism learn about both the religious and secular aspects of Judaism. The professors are vibrant, the speakers that are brought into class are well-read and interesting. Pursuing a JS as a major or minor is truly life- changing and unregrettable."

"The Jewish Studies program was a truly transformative part of my education at CSUN, and the Applied Jewish Ethics course was particularly enlightening. Showcasing the relevancy of age-old tenets of Jewish ethics in modern contexts raised a fresh and valuable perspective on ethical realities for me, and meaningfully complemented my other academic involvement in Philosophy and Political Science."

“Professor Thompson creates a supportive environment where students are encouraged to explore ideas about different Jewish communities. Professor Weininger encourages students to explore Judaism through diverse art forms. Professor Goodfriend loves to discuss the deeper philosophical topics related to Judaism.”
