Build on What You Have Learned

Transferring to the Child and Adolescent Development major at Cal State Northridge will allow you to build upon your coursework at the community college (or other colleges/universities).

Transfer Students with an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)

The California Community Colleges (CCC) Associate in Art for Transfer (AA-T) and the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) degrees are two-year associate degrees that are fully transferable to the CSU and are no more than 60 semester units or 90 quarter units. With these Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) — sometimes called a Degree with a Guarantee — students who meet the CSU’s minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus, though not necessarily to a particular campus or major.

With an ADT you will be able to earn two degrees — your associate’s degree and your bachelor’s degree — with only 120 units if you transfer into a program at the CSU that’s similar to the one in which you earned your associate’s at a California Community College. If you’re already enrolled at a California Community College or thinking of applying to one, visit the college’s transfer center or talk to a counselor to explore available AA-T and AS-T degrees and develop a plan that will allow you to transfer to the CSU as part of the ADT program.

Admission Requirements for ADT

If you have been awarded or are pursuing an AA-T or AS-T degree from your California Community College and wish to transfer to the California State University, you must:

  • have earned or be completing an approved Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) at the time you apply;
  • have completed a minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis and an approved set of general-education requirements (CSU GE-Breadth or IGETC);
  • submit your application for admission to CSU campuses for an open term by the published deadline;
  • submit all requested transcripts and documents by published deadlines;
  • meet CSU admission eligibility requirements for the programs to which you are applying; and
  • comply with any other prescribed admission requirements.

How to Apply

Lower-Division Transfer Students (LDT)

Please note: Due to enrollment demands, most CSU campuses restrict or prohibit the admission of lower-division transfer (LDT) students who have earned fewer than 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units).

If you have completed 59 or fewer transferable semester units, or 89 or fewer transferable quarter units, by the time you plan to enter a CSU, you are considered a lower-division transfer (LDT) applicant. Please check with the campus before applying.

Admission Requirements for LDT Students

To be admitted to the California State University as a lower-division transfer (LDT) student, you must:

  • have completed "a to g" course requirements in high school;
  • have graduated from high school (received a high school diploma or General Educational Development, or GED, certificate);
  • minimum CSU admission eligibility requirements of a first-time freshman;

  • have achieved an overall college GPA of at least 2.00 (This GPA is calculated using all your transfer units attempted. In case of high-demand majors and campuses, a GPA of 2.00 may not be sufficient to be admitted);
  • be in good standing at the last college or university you attended. (In simple terms, “good standing” means you are eligible to re-enroll at your last college or university); and
  • have completed, with a grade of C- minus or better, a course in GE Section A2 in written communication and a course in GE section B4 in mathematics or quantitative reasoning.
