A Joint Statement from the CSU EOP Directors
Respectfully submitted to Chancellor White
and the 23 CSU Presidents on June 14, 2017

November, 2020
Statement of Support AB1460

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at California State University, Northridge strongly supports the full implementation of California State Assembly Bill 1460 (AB1460). The intent of this legislation is “that students of the California State University system acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them comprehend the diversity and social justice history of the United States and of the society in which they live to enable them to contribute to that society as responsible and constructive citizens.”

The Ethnic Studies programs and EOP have come about from demands voiced by the historically underrepresented and underserved communities, seeking educational access and equity in higher education. Through the collaboration between Ethnic Studies and EOP, we have been able to establish student focused programs which have developed a learning environment that promotes educational equity, encourages ethnic pride and fosters a sense of belonging which contributes to the academic success of the students, many of whom are first generation.

The Ethnic Studies faculty are experts in their fields. Not only are they academically prepared, but many have the personal experience and have traveled the same journey as that of the students they teach. California State University, Northridge is fortunate to have faculty and staff equipped to make great contributions to implementing AB1460 in a manner that meets both the letter and spirit of the law and most importantly the educational needs of the students it serves.

We call on the CSU Chancellor, The Academic Senate of the California State University and the Administration at California State University, Northridge to fully involve and consult the Ethnic Studies faculty in the development and implementation of AB1460.
Together we can advance inclusion, equity and social justice.
