Late Change in Academic Schedule

Matador Academic Challenge

Late Change in Academic Schedule Forms

Students are permitted to change their initial enrollment by following the University’s Schedule Adjustment procedure. Ordinarily, during the first four weeks of the Fall or Spring semester, students may add, drop or change the basis of grading online through the CSUN Portal using the self-service registration system, or later by filing a Late Change in Academic Schedule for Undergraduate Students form. For additional details and deadlines, consult the Late Schedule Changes page or contact the Office of the Registrar. For more details regarding the policy, check out the catalog .

  • Official Enrollments: Enrollments by the end of the Late Registration/Schedule Adjustment Period and the 20th day of classes are considered official.
  • Withdrawals After Week 4: Withdrawals after the 20th day of instruction are rarely approved, except for serious and compelling circumstances with documented evidence.
  • Adding Classes:
    • Weeks 2 Through Week 12: Students may add classes with instructor approval and A permission number.
    • After Week 12: Adding classes is rarely approved and requires documented proof of serious circumstances.
  • Disciplinary Action: Courses linked to disciplinary action cannot be withdrawn.
  • Title IX Matters: Students wishing to be excused from faculty approvals for Title IX matters (e.g., sexual harassment, sexual violence) should contact Undergraduate Studies.
  • Precautions for Dropping Classes: Students should review potential impacts on their academic schedule before dropping classes.

  • Weeks 1-4: Students may withdraw from classes online. In Week 1, students can add classes without permission unless restricted. From Week 2 through Week 12, students can add classes with instructor permission.
  • After Week 4 and Before Final 3 Weeks: Withdrawals are only granted for serious and compelling reasons with academic administrator approval.
  • Final 3 Weeks (Last 20%): Withdrawals are not allowed unless caused by circumstances beyond the student's control (e.g., serious illness or accident). In such cases, a grade of Incomplete may be assigned if appropriate.

For more information visit Late Schedule Change Deadlines.

  1. Review potential impacts: Students should review potential impacts on their academic schedule before dropping classes.
  2. Fill out the form: Download, save and complete this form to request a change in schedule.
  3. Statement of Reason: Include a statement describing the serious and compelling reason for your request and the consequences if it is not granted.
  4. Documentation: Submit any available documentation that supports your reason for the request.
  5. Medical Requests: For medical withdrawal, include relevant documentation and a signed Student Consent and Health Care Provider Guidelines form.
  6. Adding Classes After Week 12: If you want to add classes after Week 12 or retroactively for a prior term, or after the deadline to add for summer or winter terms:
    • Obtain email approval from the instructor, department chair, or associate dean of the college offering the course.
    • Attach the email approval to your form.
  7. Submission:
    • Email the completed form, documents, and approvals (if applicable) to the Office of Undergraduate Studies at ugs@csun.edu from your CSUN email account.
    • Alternatively, deliver your documents in person to Valera Hall (VH) Room 215.

Approval of your request to withdraw from or add classes, either during the current semester or retroactively, may have consequences in other areas of the University. Reducing the number of enrolled units may affect your tuition and other fees, eligibility for financial aid, campus housing and/or international student status. Adding classes may result in additional financial charges. The Office of Undergraduate Studies and individual Colleges make only academic decisions. These decisions are transmitted to the Office of the Registrar for processing.  Notifications may be sent to additional University offices. Before submitting your request for a late change in academic schedule, you are advised to contact relevant offices directly for additional information to ensure you fully understand the impact of your request.
