Outside Scholarships

NIH, or the National Institutes of Health, is the world’s largest biomedical research institution. NIH seeks to improve health by conducting research in its own laboratories and by funding the research of other scientists throughout the United States and around the world. The program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. 

  • For each full or partial scholarship year, you are committed to two NIH service obligations: a 10 week summer laboratory experience and employment at NIH after graduation.

At a time when a college degree is what a high school diploma was to previous generations, the minimum entry-level requirement for almost every well-paying career, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) plays a critical role in enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they want and deserve. To close the educational attainment gap between African Americans and the majority population, UNCF helps promising students attend college and graduate by administering 400 scholarship and internship programs, so that even students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board.

This program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding low income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. 

Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. In addition to increasing access to higher education for these underrepresented groups, GMS also provides leadership training. Through participation in a comprehensive leadership development program, Scholars enhance academic and leadership skills, which prepare them to assume important roles in their professions and in their communities.

In demonstration of our commitment to the academic success of minority students and to the cultivation and recruitment of qualified minority employees in technical fields, scholarships are available in the amount depending on tuition balance, academic excellence and classification.Applicants must be academic high-achievers (3.0 or better GPA). Applicants must be US citizens or visa-holding Permanent Residents of African American, Asian, Pacific Island, Native American, Native Alaskan, or Hispanic descent.They must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate or graduate student in any of the following technical fields: Chemistry, Information Management, Computing & Software Systems, Material Science, Printing Management Science, Laser Optics, Physics, Material Science, and Engineering (Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Imaging, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Optical, or Software).

Applicants must be ethnic minorities currently enrolled as full-time undergraduates in accounting, finance or business or as graduate students in a Master's of Accountancy program. Applicants must also be NABA members and have a minimum 3.5 major GPA and 3.3 cumulative GPA.

Applicants must be of African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Alaskan Native or Pacific Islander ancestry, be at least college juniors studying communications in an undergraduate program and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. GEM provides three fellowship programs: MS Engineering, Ph.D. Engineering and Ph.D. Science. These fellowship opportunities are for students pursuing a master's degree or doctorate in science, engineering or a closely related field.
