CSUN President Erika D. Beck introduced the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris to a virtual gathering of more than 100 CSU alumni in the New York tri-state and Washington, D.C., Metro areas. Doug Emhoff ’87 (Communication Studies) spoke about his time at CSUN and how it shaped his future, as well as the importance of staying connected as alumni. Read more about the surprise visit.

“Graduates, welcome home!”

William Watkins, CSUN’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students, greeted thousands of Matadors with this warm welcome in front of the University Library on Friday, May 20. The university’s first two Commencement ceremonies of the spring were reserved for students who graduated in fall 2019, spring 2020, summer 2020, fall 2020, spring 2021 and summer 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic kept everyone home.

Two United States military veterans and brand-new CSUN graduates were honored during the university’s Veterans Resource Center Graduation Celebration on May 19. Elayna Bisby and Art Garcia each were awarded $1,000 scholarships, as part of the center’s Outstanding Graduating Veteran Awards.

Bisby ’22 (Communication Studies) is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where she served as a C-130 aircraft engine and propeller mechanic. She started working with other veterans as a student at Pasadena City College and continued at CSUN’s Veterans Resource Center.
