Marketing is a dynamic and exciting field to work in, and a marketing degree from CSUN prepares students for a variety of careers. Graduates can pursue careers focused in digital marketing, social media marketing, advertising, integrated marketing communications, marketing research, marketing metrics and data analytics, marketing management, product management and branding, sales, wholesaling and retailing, communications and public relations, international marketing management, and non-profit marketing.

Employers are looking for people who are the right “fit” for the job, so knowing what you want makes your job search more effective – and also increases your own job satisfaction. Use these resources to help find the right career fit for you, before you start applying for jobs.

Explore your strengths & interests: Knowing what you like and what you do best can help you understand what jobs are best for you. See some of the following tools to help with this process: 

  1. The O*Net Interest Profiler can help you identify what your interests are and how they relate to the world of work.
  2. Personal SWOT analysis: this exercise can help you identify areas you excel, what you need to work on, and potential opportunities to explore in your career. See this LinkedIn example and also a guide from Medium for how to complete on your own.
  3. Identifying Skills and Goals: WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO DO? can help individuals identify skills they most want to use, while What Color Is Your Parachute - Flower Exercise can help  identify important life goals, and prioritize what work conditions work best for you (both these activities come from the book "What Color is Your Parachute", which also has other advice & exercises to help identify career paths).

Find jobs & careers that are a match for you: The Nazarian career center has guides that can help you learn more about jobs in different fields. See website below (you will need to sign in to get access) and click on “Vault Guides” to find more in-depth information on specific careers.

O*NET also provides important career information, like how fast jobs are growing and how much you can get paid. Other job websites can breakdown popular jobs by pay - see 20 Marketing Jobs That Pay Well, and see if any are a match for you.

Once you know what you want, getting a position requires preparation — use the tools and resources below to improve your applications and increase your outreach opportunities.

Readiness tools: See the Nazarian Career Center website for advice and tools to help you with your resume, to prep for interviews, and find additional ideas to help to build your professional network.

Postings: Make sure to use Handshake to explore internships and jobs posted through Nazarian Career Center. Other useful sites include Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. Make sure your Linked in Profile is ready to go - this is a major way to connect with employers.

If jobs you are applying for more skills - considering taking a LinkedIn course or a Coursera Course to help you get an edge in your applications- these are free for CSUN students.

Events: See Nazarian Career Center's Events page for an updated list of networking events, information sessions, and job fairs, to meet directly with hiring employers.

Student clubs: These clubs provide the best opportunities to learn about careers, develop skills, and connect with professionals through a variety of events during the school year.

CSUN AMA  is the main marketing club on campus you can visit their website and also follow them on Instagram and visit their LinkedIn page.

Personal Help at the Career Center: If you want to talk to someone one-on-one, you can make an appointment at the career center. Visit the Career Education and Professional Developement Center's website and click on Make an Appointment button at the top of website to schedule (you need to be registered with handshake to schedule). The career center can also provide you with ideas on how to build your network. 

Other Nazarian Programs: The Passport program provides career guidance for select students  see website to see if you are eligible. Mentoring programs are open to all Junior students see website for application deadlines.

Resources Outside CSUN: Through research you can find networking groups in LA and beyond that could be the best fit given your career interest. Many groups hold events throughout the year (both online & in person) where you can meet peers & learn relevant skills. See below for marketing relevant groups in LA area.
