About
The purpose of the Sustainable Fashion Program is to raise awareness of fashion sustainability issues and to cultivate sustainability-conscious global citizens. This program is run by faculty with the help of student assistants to create experience learning that enhances the quality of life for students and the CSUN community through various activities and events, such as.
- Ambassador Project: recruits students who are interested in sustainable fashion and want to take action to support a sustainable lifestyle. This project not only offers students the opportunity to systematically learn about issues in the fashion industry but also enables them to have hands-on experience by leading and disseminating the information to their peers and CSUN community partners.
- Online Panel Talks: engage students in direct conversations with practitioners from various backgrounds, including fashion sustainability scholars, peer student researchers, and practitioners from the industry.
- Upcycling Competitions: offer students the opportunities to expand their creativity through designs and problem-solving.
- Sustainable Fashion EXPO: provides students a venue to meet like-minded people and to network with the community.
We strive to bring the following benefits to our students, the university, and the community.
- Empower students and foster leadership: The program offers students the opportunity to participate in their own learning curriculum. Students can decide the focus of their project and the indicators of success. Additionally, students can take the leadership role to develop activities that they are interested in and can best serve CSUN and our community, creating a sense of belonging for them.
- Connect CSUN and community: Students can gain the opportunity to directly interact with industry professionals and business leaders in sustainable fashion, receive potential career opportunities, and broaden their professional network. Student ambassadors develop projects that help connect the CSUN community. In addition, the program has received a lot of attention in the community, which helps CSUN expand its impact to a broader community.
- Cultivate Sustainability-Conscious Global Citizens: Issues in the fashion industry consist of forced labor, worker safety violations, sweatshops, water/air pollution, textile waste, microfiber pollution, inhuman animal treatment, etc. Like fighting climate change, the effort to eliminate the negative impact of the fashion industry is collective. The program helps cultivate sustainability-conscious global citizens and raise awareness of sustainable fashion.
