About Us

The DuBois-Hamer Institute for Academic Achievement (DHIAA), under the inspiration of W.E.B. DuBois and Fannie Lou Hamer, promotes academic excellence and strives to increase the recruitment and retention of students from economically disadvantaged communities to the CSUN campus. W.E.B. Du Bois was the first Black man to receive a doctorate from Harvard University in 1895 and Fannie Lou Hamer was a former Mississippi sharecropper who became a powerful political activist in the 1960s. Founding director, Dr. Barbara Rhodes established the institute in the spring of 1997. Her vision of a university-community based partnership to provide academic and emotional support to CSUN students continues to be a strategic goal of DHIAA and the college of social & behavioral sciences.

The mission of the DuBois-Hamer Institute for Academic (DHIAA) is to champion inclusive student success through dynamic community and campus collaborations. In alignment with the mission of  DHIAA, our endeavors are firmly rooted in the mission, values and vision of California State University, Northridge. We foster vibrant partnerships with diverse faculty, staff, and students across the CSUN campus community, aiming to create a thriving and safe academic environment.

Our commitment extends beyond campus borders to encompass collaboration with a wide array of local groups and organizations in the underserved tapestry of Los Angeles County. Through these collaborative efforts, we actively address community needs, foster positive social impact, and create meaningful connections between academia and the broader community.

Our comprehensive approach reflects our holistic commitment to advancing education, research, and community well-being. Moreover, DHIAA dedicates itself to serving and empowering cultural and educational institutions within our community. Embracing the spirit of inclusivity, scholarly inquiry, academic improvement, and African-American culture, DHIAA strives to create an environment where every individual is valued, celebrated, and supported in their academic journey. Join us in building a community that thrives on diversity, academic excellence, and shared success.
