New Student Orientation Leaders

NSO Leaders support the efforts of all orientation-related programs.  Serving as a campus resource, these trained student volunteers are knowledgeable about the college experience and assist new students in their transition to CSUN, aiding in the student development of personal, social, and academic skills for success.

To support Orientation, Leaders selected should embody the characteristics below and participate in a leadership training program in a wide variety of topics:

Recognizing that one's strengths are showcased in various ways, the interview process is designed to look at leadership on multiple platforms.  

VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION:
NSO Leaders support the efforts of all SDTP programs. Serving as a campus resource, these trained student volunteers are knowledgeable about the college experience and assist new students in their transition to CSUN. Leaders accomplish this by aiding in the development of the student’s personal, social, and academic skills for success. Support in signature events such as President’s Picnic, New Student Convocation, family programming, commencement, and more!

All required training will be conducted during the spring semester and summer session. We can guarantee that at least three training sessions will help prepare you for orientation sessions. We hold training on the first Thursday of every month during Spring Semester. We advise you to plan accordingly. If any problems should arise, let our staff know via email.

Required Training Sessions for 2025

We are working towards having the upcoming orientation season starting in April. We will have training once a month, on the first Thursdays in April and May 2025, during the afternoons, and overnight training after Commencement Programming. NSO Training Dates:

Training #1 (NSO Welcome) Thursday, April 3rd 4pm - 6pm 
Training #2 (Commencement) Thursday, May 1st 4pm - 6pm 
Training #3 (NSO Retreat) May 29th to May 31st Overnight
Mock Orientation Early July Tentative

Required Programs:

Orientation Leaders will be expected to participate in signature programs such as Honors Convocation, Commencement, Parent & Family Programming, President's Picnic, and New Student Convocation. Orientation Leaders can expect to be present for the following: 

  • 2 Commencement Ceremonies (about 5 hours per commencement ceremony) 
  • 6 Summer Orientation Programs (about 11 hours per orientation program) 

In order to receive priority registration for the Fall 2025 semester, leaders must complete the NSO Retreat. To receive priority registration for the Spring 2026 semester, a leader must complete the President’s Picnic and New Student Convocation. Completing 8 Summer Orientations will allow Orientation Leaders to receive a Fall 2025 semester parking pass or equivalent compensation. 

  • Honors Convocation (May 10, 2025) 
  • Commencement 2025 (May 16, 2025 to May 19, 2025)
  • First-Time Freshmen Orientations (July 2025 to August 2025)
  • International/Transfer Orientations (July 2025 & August 2025)
  • President’s Picnic (Fall 2025)
  • New Student Convocation (Fall 2025)
  • Parent and Family Day (Fall 2025)

You will be able to provide us with your preferred schedule for Commencement and Orientation, and we will do all we can to match this schedule. We ask that you keep all listed days available in case there are programmatic changes or initial preferences that cannot be accommodated.

ORIENTATION LEADER APPLICATION DETAILS:

  • Take notice that the online application form can only be submitted once and typically takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
  • Applications close on TBD
  • If eligible, you will receive communication once applications close if you are selected for the interview round (TBD)
