Instructional Materials

Overview

As part of CSUN’s commitment to excellence through diversity and inclusion, all learning and course materials distributed to students must be made accessible. All course materials including handouts (printed and electronic), videos, software, and course content within Canvas must follow accessibility and universal design requirements to enhance student learning and ensure all students have access to information. Every video should have closed captions. An audio described version should also be available.

Make one design that fits everyone including documents, website, and media with captioning.

Accessible Course Materials Reach More Students

This page will provide information and resources that will help in creating accessible and universally inclusive materials for all students. The Universal Design Center (UDC) is available for consultations and training at udc@csun.edu or, during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm Pacific time), at (818) 677-5898.

Course and Classroom Accessibility

CSUN strives to create learning environments to support all students. This requires that all materials used within a course or classroom be universally designed and/or provide accessible alternate options.

Do You Have Videos?

Are videos captioned? Every video should have closed captions. An audio described version also should be available.

Document Accessibility

Document accessibility is intentionally designing documents to be viewed and accessed by people who use assistive technology. All documents, whether they are intended to be published on a website, distributed via email, or a printed document, must be designed with accessibility in mind. Document authoring software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel incorporate features to design accessible documents. Adobe Acrobat Professional and Adobe Indesign also support accessibility for Portable Document Formats (PDF). The process to create an accessible document using these authoring software is described in the pages below.
