Since 1973, CSUN’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) has empowered students to elevate their academic performance through personalized tutoring, and supplemental instruction. Students who engage with our programs build lasting confidence as they sharpen critical thinking, strengthen study and writing skills, and excel in their coursework—reflecting CSUN’s deep-rooted commitment to academic excellence.

The timeline above shows the history of the LRC.

Fall 1973 — The LRC opened on August 31, 1973 in the old campus Library, under Director Noel Korn.
- Originally started as a program by the Counseling Center.
- 1976 — Dr. John Hartzog named director of the LRC.
- 1998 — The LRC moved to the Administration Building, now known as Bayramian Hall.
- 2001 — Sheryl Thompson named director of the LRC.
- 2010 — Rashawn Green named director of the LRC.
- Fall 2013 — LRC relocated to the Oviatt Library, now known as University Library.
- 2020–Present — The LRC joined Office of Student Success, under the leadership of Dr. Melanie Bocanegra, AVP of Student Success.
Class-Based and Individualized Support
The Science, Math, and Related Topics (SMART) Lab Offers academic support in accounting, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Our tutors are accomplished undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of university disciplines who are available to assist students on a walk-in basis.
Help at any stage in the writing process! The University Writing Center aids students in reading and writing skills-building. Each semester, over 3,000 students come for one-on-one consultations, workshops, and much more.
The LRC is a key partner is the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program to help staff over 60 SI Writing sections each semester with student SI Leaders. For individual writing support, the LRC employs a team of over 40 Peer Writing Consultants who are available through the academic year for all students.
