Simon Garrett was the first child in his immediate family to attend College and is a first generation immigrant to the US. He was born in a rural part of central England, and completed his baccalaureate degree in Environmental Science at The University of Sussex. He moved to London, to Imperial College, to complete his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. He relocated to the U.S. in 1991, spending time at Universities in Chicago, Toronto and Michigan, before heading west.

Simon taught at CSUCI from 2004 to 2008 and at CSUN since 2008. His research involves surface science, particularly corrosion of metal alloys and the chemistry of small molecules in water-ice. He served as the Department Chair in Chemistry & Biochemistry from 2019 to 2025, and became Interim Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in 2025. His motivation has always been to help and inspire students, paying forward the knowledge and kindness that faculty members showed him when he was an undergraduate student.
